The students are experimenting with a new site right now. It is called Museum Box. They are learning how to research bibliographic information on a person, specifically from the Civil War. They will use Museum Box to create a final project. Next week I will link their projects to the site.

We had a great day at the LinguiSHTIKS tournament yesterday. Cranberry Elementary provided a great place to meet and a great breakfast. Way to go CC for her undefeated status in the 3/4th grade level!!

Open House

Chess Tournament

Today we had a great time at the Chess Tournament. Eight schools came to Keystone to compete. Everyone played well and even impressed themselves with how well they did. Chess seems to be a favorite game among GEM students so they are sad the tournament is over. We will sporadically continue to play throughout the year, though.

A New School Year

The summer has come to an end and the new year has begun. Hopefully your child was ready and excited to start the school year. The teachers of gifted students will soon be meeting to discuss and schedule the unit of study, competitions, and field trips. You will be notified of these dates after they are decided. The end of the school year has arrived. I hope everyone had a good year and heads into summer knowing they had a successful year. Congratulations and good luck to the 6th graders who are heading off to the Jr. High school. Best of luck to those students who will be moving away in the near future. I wish you all the best.

Please keep reading, practicing math facts, and making your brain work. Do fun activities outside and have a great summer!!

To my parents, I apologize for all the confusion. Boy, our fields trips this year have been crazy. The Spelling Bee is at the Clarion Mall on February 9th. We will be going to Union High School for Equations. Let's hope these events go as scheduled. Next month we have a few more events scheduled. Keep an eye out for details.

The Start of the Second Marking Period

It is now the start of a new marking period. I want to thank Miss Lauer for teaching during my maternity leave. I think the students had a good start to the year. We will be starting to prepare for all the upcoming competitions, such as Ling, Equations, and Chess. Happy Fall everyone! The cool weather has arrived.

I know I haven't been teaching the GEM classes for months now due to my new schedule, but I am always checking in on "my" students. It sure has been an interesting year, having to adjust to new teachers, and next year will bring more of the same. But... I promise to return to the classroom once my maternity leave comes to an end.

Students, keep focused until June. Enjoy your summer break and work hard for your teachers in the fall. Even when I am at home I will still keep tabs on how things are going.

Three students participated in a LinguiSHTIKS training. This very challenging grammar game would be very tough for almost all adults. This game is making me relearn how to correctly use sentence types or structures, all uses of nouns, verbs, adjectives, clauses, prepositions, etc...

The Renaissance Fair

September 26th, 2009 Keystone Elementary's gifted class went to the Pittsburgh Renaissance Fair. All the gifted students and their families went into the fair and did all kinds of things! Like, some of them got to preform on a stage, watch a fire breather, watch a jousting match, play games and ride rides. They had good food like, giant turkey legs, corn on the cob, iced tea, lemonade, brownies, chicken, keilbasa, beans and sugar, and sinse it was so damp the sugar in the packets became one big hunk of sugar! Oh and don't forget about the gift shops! You could buy stuff like, wooden swords, fake eye patches, wooden shields, wooden barrels that could really hold water, wooden axes and toy puzzles (also wooden.) Then you could buy stuff like, cologne, air fresheners, tobacco, wine, CDs and wooden flutes. I would encourage everybody to go next year. I'll bet you'll like it and come back again the next time you get the chance.

Welcome Back

Welcome back to a new school year. I hope you enjoyed your summer and are feeling ready to start off the year great. This year our theme is the Renaissance time period. We will be taking a couple of field trips, making art and costumes, reading and researching, and hopefully having a great time while learning. Summer Fun

Happy summer to you all! I just came back from my vacation in Virginia and I have a recommendation for you. If you ever go near the Luray Caverns, I suggest the Garden Maze located near the cavern entrance. The trick is to find 4 goal locations and make it out of the maze as quickly as possible. The little gift shop is full of maze books and brain teaser activities. I thought of you all while I was there. Hope you are enjoying your summer!

As the year winds to an end, I hope that each of you gained valuable information throughout the year. You have advanced in your educational skills, but I also think you matured in your thinking and acting. Use this summer to your advantage. Go outside and play, find new adventures and come back to school refreshed and ready to learn in the fall.

Parents, encourage your children to play to become physically fit as well as play to expand horizons through creativity. Read with your children and have intellectual conversations to keep their minds educationally challenged. If possible, visit new places to learn more about the world around us. I can't wait to hear about all the new experiences.

All students are welcome to add to their blog over the summer. I would love to see pictures or read about summer adventures. I'll be sure to post comments when I see them.

We were editing pictures and stuff. It's cool because you can change it around alot and change the color and position. We could also put a bunch of random stickers and pictures around it all over the place. It's pretty cool. We put the edited pictures in a scrapbook and got to choose a layout, and background for two scrapbook pages. It was very fun.

The Cricket in Times Square Final Project

We had to make posters on the book we read in class a Cricket in Times Square. Each of us had a character and we had to write a journal entry with the conclusion, main events, and a brief description of other characters in it. We had to have five pictures and souveniers that had to do with events in the story, too. We also had to write two diary entrys, one with the character's feelings in the beginning of the story, and one with the character's feelings at the end of the story. We had to do an over-all background on the big sheet of paper we taped and glued everything onto. It was very fun and I had a lot of fun doing it.

Strawberry Cream Soda Party

4th grade had a party with an experiment with strawberry cream soda. We got the idea from the book A Cricket in Times Square. Some of us said it tasted like cotton candy. It had strawberry syrup, milk, vanilla ice cream, and soda water. We all had a great time.

Challenge 24

Challenge 24 is a mathematical game that involves cards with 4 numbers on each card. The players must find a way to use all four numbers in an equation that equals 24. The first player to find a solution earns the card. The player with the most points on their cards wins the game. An RIU6 competition is played every spring. All students in grades 4-6 are invited to participate in the school-wide competition. The top 2 students in each grade are eligible for the team slots to compete at the IU in Clarion.

Scripps-Howard Spelling Bee

The Scripps-Howard Spelling Bee is the national spelling bee you may have seen on TV. RIU6 has a yearly competition in February at the Clarion Mall. Anyone in grades 4-6 can participate. Keystone holds a local competition and the top 2 or 3 spellers in the school participates in the competition at the mall.

Equations

This challenging game is intended to increase mathematical skill. Students are to use the rolled cubes to create an equation that solves a given solution. Certain variables are set so that there are requirements for what type of equations must be made or particular numbers that must be used. Competitions are set up at RIU6 for grades 4 and up. Typically, it is the students in the gifted program that are included.

LinguiSHTIK

Ling is a very challenging language game that forces students to use every grammar skill they know. The students are to create a word using certain letters, use that word in a particular part of speech, and create a sentence using a chosen pattern structure. RIU6 tournaments are held for the students in the gifted program for grades 4 and up, but some districts use the game as a learning tool in the regular classroom.

Each school district runs their chess competitions differently. At Keystone, it is only open to the students in the gifted program. The tournament is typically held in October at Keystone. All school districts within IU6 are invited to attend. The number of participants and the ages of the participants varies each year due to the number of school districts attending.

As we go through the 2008 school year, the GEM class will be studying inventions and technology. We will learn about past inventions and how they have led to the modern technology we have today. The second half of the year will be devoted to using modern technology. If you have any input or ideas for topics, guest speakers, or field trips, please let me know.
